A Comprehensive Guide to Understanding Pipe Sizes, Schedules & Flexibility

A Comprehensive Guide to Understanding Pipe Sizes, Schedules & Flexibility Introduction Whether you are selecting the right pipe size for a pipe system, considering the implications of thermal expansion on your system’s integrity, or specifying the intricacies of pipe schedules, pipe materials and pipe flexibility, this comprehensive guide is available to support designers and contractors with accurate information for piping infrastructure. Common Pipe Sizes The pipe size is specified with two numbers: the nominal pipe diameter (or bore) and the pipe schedule. This sets the outside pipe diameter, the wall thickness (and hence the internal diameter). Dimensions shown are to be ASME B36.10 For larger pipe sizes, please click the link to download as a PDF. DOWNLOAD PIPE SIZE CHART Pipe Classification There are four main pipe classifications that you can use to identify your pipe’s sizing quickly. These pipe size standards help you estimate the full size of your pipe, so you can safely install piping systems, pipe supports, and pipe layouts. Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) NPS is an abbreviation of Nominal Pipe Size, a term used as a guideline number defining the diameter of the pipe. Nominal pipe size refers to only the outside diameter (OD) of a pipe, making it somewhat vague. For example, when we say pipe size is 2 NPS, it refers to all the pipes having 2.375-inch (or 60.3 mm) as outside diameter irrespective of wall thickness and inside diameter (ID). Nominal Bore (NB) Nominal Bore is the European designation equivalent to NPS, in which sizes are measured in millimetres. NB (nominal bore) is also frequently used interchangeably with NPS.    Diameter Nominal (DN)  This is the international and European metric method used to describe NPS (or NB).DN pipe sizes numbers are therefore different to NPS. For example, the metric equivalent of an NPS 6 pipe (6”) is DN 150. (To convert from NPS 6 to DIN simply multiply the 6 x 25=150. (150mm) Outside Diameter (OD) OD is the outside diameter of the pipe and is fixed for a given size.  The OD is one of the most important dimensions a pipe support manufacturer requires. This dimension is critical when forming a Ubolt or rolling a pipe clamp. The ID of the pipe support needs to suit the OD of the pipe. Refer to “Pipe Materials” section for further explanation of the varying pipe OD’s across pipe materials. The NPS is very loosely related to the inside diameter in inches, but only for NPS 1/8 to NPS 12. For NPS 14 and larger, the NPS is equal to the outside diameter (OD) in inches. For a given NPS, the OD stays constant and the wall thickness increases with larger SCH. For a given SCH, the OD increases with increasing NPS while the wall thickness increases or stays constant. Pipe Schedules Pipe schedules refer to a standardised system used to specify the thickness of pipes. They indicate the thickness and pressure rating of pipes, helping ensure compatibility and safety in piping systems. The schedule number typically correlates with the wall thickness of the pipe, with higher schedule numbers indicating thicker walls and higher pressure ratings. Common pipe schedules include Schedule 40, Schedule 80, and Schedule 160, among others, each suitable for different applications and pressure requirements. As the schedule number increases, the wall thickness of the pipe increases. The schedule number is roughly calculated as per formula below: Schedule = 1000 x (P/S)P = Internal service pressure of pipe (psig)S = Ultimate tensile strength of the pipe material (psi) Understanding the schedule of your pipes is crucial because the thickness directly affects how long your piping system will last. If your pipes are handling more weight than they can handle, they might break, burst, leak, or damage the entire system. Using standard measurements also helps you choose the right supports for your pipes, which improves the system’s performance. If you don’t match your pipes with the correct supports of the right size, it could cause damage, accidents, and project delays. Pipe Materials Across all sectors a diverse range of materials and pipe types are employed, each possessing distinct characteristics and often differing in sizing conventions. This variability can lead to confusion within the industry regarding the outside diameter of pipes and the selection of appropriate pipe supports. To address this, we’ve provided a chart below outlining the dimensions of ten commonly used pipe materials. DOWNLOAD PIPE MATERIALS CHART The material and type of pipe can significantly impact its outside diameter. Different materials, such as steel, copper, PVC, or HDPE, have varying physical properties, including density, elasticity, and thermal expansion coefficients. These properties affect how much the pipe expands or contracts in response to changes in temperature and pressure. For instance, metal pipes like steel or copper tend to have a smaller outside diameter compared to plastic pipes like PVC or HDPE for a given nominal size. This is because metals generally have higher densities and less thermal expansion compared to plastics. As a result, metal pipes maintain their dimensions more consistently across different temperature and pressure conditions, leading to a smaller outside diameter. On the other hand, plastic pipes often have a larger outside diameter for the same nominal size due to their lower density and greater thermal expansion. Plastic materials tend to expand more when exposed to heat, causing the pipe to increase in size. Additionally, plastic pipes may have thicker walls to compensate for their lower strength compared to metal pipes, further contributing to a larger outside diameter. In summary, the material and type of pipe influence its outside diameter due to differences in density, thermal expansion characteristics, and wall thickness requirements. Understanding these factors is essential for proper pipe selection and sizing in various applications. As a manufacturer of pipe supports, we understand the importance of accommodating various sizes and materials. Whether it’s steel, copper, PVC, or any other material, our products are designed to cater to the needs of different piping systems, ensuring reliable support regardless of the pipe type or size. Pipe Thermal Expansion When a pipe is subjected to temperature variations, it expands or contracts in response to the change in temperature. This expansion or contraction can lead to several notable impacts on piping systems: Stress on Supports and Connections: Thermal expansion can exert significant forces on pipe supports, anchors, and connections. If the supports or connections are not designed to accommodate thermal movement, they may experience excessive stress, leading to deformation, cracking, or failure. Buckling or Bowing: In long piping runs, thermal expansion can cause the pipe to bow or buckle if it’s constrained at both ends. This can result in misalignment, reduced flow efficiency, and potential damage to the pipe and surrounding structures. Leakage: Fluctuations in temperature can cause joints and seals to weaken or loosen over time, increasing the risk of leakage. This is particularly critical in systems conveying fluids or gases where leakage can lead to environmental hazards, operational disruptions, and safety concerns. System Integrity: Over time, repeated thermal cycling can weaken the structural integrity of pipes and components, leading to premature aging and eventual failure. This can result in costly repairs, downtime, and potential safety hazards. Mitigating Issues Caused by Thermal Expansion To mitigate the impacts of thermal expansion on piping systems, engineers employ various strategies to ensure flexibility in pipe systems, including: Expansion Joints: Installing expansion joints at strategic locations allows the pipe to expand or contract without exerting excessive stress on the system. Expansion loops: Pipe expansion loops are used to provide flexibility in piping systems to accommodate thermal expansion and contraction. These loops are added to the straight sections of pipes, allowing them to bend when the pipe expands. By introducing perpendicular sections to the pipe’s direction of expansion, the loop absorbs the stress before transmitting it to the anchor points. The longer the loop, the less force is created. Flexible Supports: Using flexible pipe supports, height adjustable supports and pipe hangers that can absorb thermal movement helps prevent stress on the piping system.  Proper Sizing and Layout: Designing piping systems with adequate space for thermal expansion and contraction reduces the likelihood of buckling or stress-induced damage. Material Selection: Choosing materials with low coefficients of thermal expansion can help minimise the effects of temperature fluctuations on piping systems. Overall, understanding and properly managing thermal expansion is essential for ensuring the long-term reliability, safety, and efficiency of piping systems in various industrial, commercial, and residential applications. The cost of the project can be reduced substantially if the right amount of flexibility is built in the piping at the initial layout stage. Read more about pipe flexibility here. Calculating Thermal Movement & Pipe Flexibility The first step in accommodating thermal movement is to compute the exact change in the linear length of the piping system over the distance of interest, along with a suitable safety factor. The actual expansion of 100-foot pipe lengths has been computed at different temperatures for the most common piping materials (carbon steel, stainless steel and copper tubing) and are shown in the table here bellow. These values should not be applied to pipe of alternate materials as they will vary. Expansion coefficients may vary 5% or more when obtained from different sources and should be taken into account. See an example of calculating pipe flexibility here. Conclusion In conclusion, navigating the complexities of piping infrastructure demands a thorough understanding of various factors, from selecting the appropriate pipe size to managing thermal expansion and considering pipe schedules, materials, and flexibility. This comprehensive guide serves as a valuable resource for designers and contractors alike, providing accurate and insightful information to ensure the successful planning, implementation, and maintenance of piping systems. The Importance of Passivation for Stainless Steel

The Importance of Passivation for Stainless Steel: Corrosion Resistance & Compliance with Australian Standards Stainless steel is widely used in various industries due to its excellent corrosion resistance and durability. However, it is essential to understand that even stainless steel is not entirely immune to corrosion. To maintain its long-lasting properties and to comply with Australian standards, passivation is a crucial process that must be employed. The Need for Passivation Stainless steel contains a protective layer of chromium oxide on its surface that shields it from most corrosive environments. This passive film is self-repairing when damaged. However, during manufacturing processes like welding, machining, or forming, the passive layer may be compromised, leading to the creation of active sites susceptible to corrosion. These active sites can accelerate corrosion, especially in aggressive environments such as coastal areas with high salt content or chemical-rich industrial settings. The Process Passivation is a surface treatment that removes free iron, contaminants, and other impurities from the stainless steel’s surface, restoring the protective passive layer. The process involves several steps, including cleaning, pickling, and rinsing. The cleaning stage eliminates dirt, grease, and oils, while pickling removes impurities and iron residues. Finally, the stainless steel is thoroughly rinsed to eliminate any remaining traces of pickling solution. Benefits Enhanced Corrosion Resistance: this process ensures the stainless steel maintains its optimal corrosion resistance, extending the material’s lifespan and reducing maintenance costs. Aesthetic Improvement: By removing surface imperfections and stains, it enhances the stainless steel’s appearance, making it more visually appealing. Compliant with Australian Standards: Several Australian standards, such as AS 1627.1, specify the requirements for passivation to ensure the longevity and reliability of stainless steel in different applications. Why Stainless Steel Corrodes Without Passivation When the passive layer on stainless steel is damaged or contaminated during manufacturing, the exposed metal becomes susceptible to corrosion. Without proper protection, the active sites on the surface allow corrosion to propagate rapidly. As a result, the stainless steel may develop rust or pitting, compromising its structural integrity and performance. Passivation plays a crucial role in maintaining the exceptional corrosion resistance of stainless steel and ensuring compliance with Australian standards. By eliminating surface contaminants and restoring this protective layer, passivation safeguards stainless steel against corrosion, making it a reliable and durable material for various applications. Engineers, manufacturers, and end-users must recognise the importance of passivation in preserving the longevity and performance of stainless steel in diverse environments, from marine to industrial settings. Adhering to proper passivation procedures will ensure the continued success of stainless steel as a reliable material in numerous industries.

Mitigating Corrosion Risks in Pipe Supports: Effective Prevention Strategies

Mitigating Corrosion Risks in Pipe Supports: Effective Prevention Strategies Corrosion is a persistent adversary in industrial environments, posing a threat to the integrity and longevity of piping systems. Among the numerous locations where corrosion can occur within these systems, pipe supports stand out as particularly vulnerable areas. Corrosion in pipe supports can lead to structural weakening, leaks, and ultimately, system failures. However, understanding the various causes of corrosion in pipe supports and implementing proactive measures can help engineers and operators effectively mitigate risks and extend the lifespan of assets. Causes of Corrosion in Pipe Supports Galvanic Corrosion Galvanic corrosion arises when two dissimilar metals come into contact in the presence of an electrolyte, forming an electrochemical cell. The more noble metal acts as the cathode, while the less noble metal acts as the anode, leading to accelerated corrosion of the anodic metal. This type of corrosion is particularly concerning in pipe supports, where different materials may be used together without adequate isolation. Moisture Exposure Piping systems often encounter moisture from various sources, such as environmental conditions, process fluids, and leaks. Moisture creates an electrolytic environment conducive to corrosion, especially when combined with other factors like contaminants and temperature fluctuations. Pipe supports, often being in close contact with the pipes, are particularly prone to moisture accumulation, making them susceptible to corrosion. Chemical Exposure Exposure to corrosive chemicals in industrial processes can accelerate the corrosion rate of pipe supports. Chemicals such as acids, alkalis, and salts can initiate corrosion reactions, leading to material degradation and eventual failure. In many industrial settings, pipe supports are exposed to a variety of chemicals, which necessitates stringent corrosion prevention measures. Mechanical Stress Mechanical stress, including vibration, friction, and pressure fluctuations, can weaken protective coatings and expose underlying metal surfaces to corrosion. Additionally, stress-induced movement in pipe supports can disrupt corrosion inhibitors and protective films, exacerbating corrosion damage. The integrity of pipe supports is essential to handle mechanical stress effectively without compromising the overall system. Effective Prevention Strategies To mitigate corrosion risks in pipe supports and ensure the long-term integrity of piping systems, several proactive measures can be employed: Material Selection Choosing corrosion-resistant materials for pipe supports is a fundamental step in preventing corrosion. Stainless steel, galvanised steel, and corrosion-resistant alloys are excellent choices. It’s crucial to avoid using dissimilar metals in direct contact to minimise the potential for galvanic corrosion. Protective Coatings Applying protective coatings, such as epoxy, polyethylene, or fusion-bonded epoxy (FBE) coatings, to pipe supports can create a barrier against moisture and chemical exposure. These coatings should be regularly inspected and maintained to ensure their effectiveness over time. Proper application and monitoring of these coatings significantly enhance the durability of pipe supports. Insulated Pipe Supports Utilising insulated pipe supports can interrupt the electrical circuit between dissimilar metals, thereby preventing galvanic corrosion. Insulated supports, made from non-conductive materials like plastics or composites, create a physical barrier that isolates the pipe from the supporting structure. This method is highly effective in environments where different metals are in proximity. Cathodic Protection Implementing cathodic protection systems, such as sacrificial anodes or impressed current systems, can control corrosion by supplying electrons to the metal surface, thereby reducing the likelihood of corrosion initiation. These systems are particularly useful in environments with high corrosion potential, providing an additional layer of protection to pipe supports. Proper Installation and Design Ensuring proper installation and design of pipe supports is crucial. This includes considering factors such as load-bearing capacity, thermal expansion, and compatibility with surrounding materials. Avoiding sharp edges or crevices where moisture and contaminants can accumulate is essential, as these can promote corrosion. Thoughtful design and installation practices minimise potential corrosion risks from the outset. Regular Inspection and Maintenance Establishing a comprehensive inspection and maintenance program is vital to detect corrosion early and address any issues promptly. Regular cleaning, lubrication, and corrosion inhibitor application can help preserve the integrity of pipe supports and extend their lifespan. Consistent maintenance efforts contribute significantly to reducing the risk of unexpected failures. By incorporating these prevention strategies into the design, installation, and maintenance of pipe supports, engineers and operators can effectively mitigate corrosion risks and enhance the reliability and durability of piping systems. Investing in corrosion prevention measures not only safeguards assets but also minimises downtime, maintenance costs, and safety risks associated with corrosion-related failures. As the backbone of industrial infrastructure, proactive corrosion management is essential for ensuring the continued operation and productivity of industrial facilities.

Understanding Volatility in Steel Pricing

Understanding Volatility in Steel Pricing Global economies are on a path to recovery after a slump during the pandemic. This recovery continues to push the price of commodities high. The steel market has seen unprecedented fluctuation in pricing, with the trend likely to persist over the next year. Global politics, supply chain disruptions, fuel prices and heavy spending on infrastructure are factors that will continuously cause steel price swings. The Australian market is no exception to the ever-volatile steel prices despite controlling more than 38% of the global iron ore production. The current price of iron ore is ~$150/tonne, with estimations that this price will drop further to ~$109/tonne by 2022. While western economies are pursuing economic growth through massive construction projects, China, the biggest importer of Australian iron ore, is slowing down investment in the property market. China, the largest steel producer in the world, is aiming to be carbon neutral by 2060. The Chinese government is putting measures to control steel production and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It is a strategy that has seen annual steel production in China drop by 13.2% by August 2021. This decline significantly affects pricing dynamics across the world. The COVID-19 pandemic saw some companies halting steel production leading to smaller inventories across the globe. At the same time, the demand for the product soared. As economies reopen, there is a higher demand for steel in heavy industries like automotive, machinery, oil and gas. Manufacturers are walking a tightrope as they try to rebuild steel inventories and satisfy demand. In general, World Steel Association (WSA) reports a 1.4% year-on-year increase in steel production for the period ending in August 2021. Supply Chain Interruptions The pandemic period has  been a wake-up call for global economies. Geopolitics, scarcity of products and trade wars spelled doom to previously sustainable supply chains. The shortage of shipping containers, protracted delays in deliveries and trade sanctions like the one between Australia and China in May 2020 slowed down steel production and distribution throughout the world. Supply chain interruption means that steel producers globally are struggling to restore operations to normal levels.  As supply chain interruptions persist, the overall cost of steel transportation keeps rising. Manufacturers pass down these costs to consumers, propelling the global prices of steel in all its alloys to record high levels.  Australian Steel Market Overview The Australian economy is steadily rebounding. Amid this recovery is a serious concern over the rising cost of steel. The government has set out an ambitious project that aims to boost the local manufacturing sector, a strategy that has attracted more local investors. Agriculture is another sector that has seen tremendous growth over the past year across the country.  The progress of these economic sectors is accompanied by massive construction. Local manufacturers are expanding their production and warehousing facilities. Massive investment in infrastructure projects and the minerals technology industries are also driving demand for steel throughout Australia.  Where Does the Steel Industry Go From Here? Whilst the industry has enjoyed relatively stable pricing in the decade prior to 2021, steel is like any other commodity – subject to fluctuations due to demand, raw material availability, shipping costs, and uniquely, the myriad disruptions caused by a once in a lifetime pandemic.. Whilst supply chains are returning to normalcy this does not guarantee that the prices will stop fluctuating. When setting the prices of commodities, industry players rely heavily on data from manufacturing supply chains. It is a reactive pricing strategy that has had its successes in the past. The pandemic and post-pandemic periods have tested this strategy to the limits. As it stands, steel manufacturers and businesses need to re-think their pricing models to avert business losses and cushion customers from high prices to ensure a sustainable and  supply. The operations in steel manufacturing industries around the globe are returning to normalcy. Iron ore prices globally are yet to stabilize. There are expectations that steel pricing will plateau in the last half of 2022, however with multiple factors influencing the costs, this is speculation only.  Lessons for Businesses in the Steel Sector It has been a rough few years for businesses with volatile steel prices leading to financial losses. Price fluctuations have had far-reaching consequences across all sectors of the economy. As we move forward, players in the steel sector should adopt digital tools and technology to generate accurate demand forecasts, optimize pricing and scale up operations to match actual market demands. Companies must adapt quickly to market dynamics and leverage data to counter volatilities. By using appropriate technologies, steel manufacturers can segment the consumer market and optimize pricing for every segment. Is there an end in sight? Definitely yes — On the condition that steel industry players adapt quickly to the ever-changing market dynamics.

Piping flexibility & Thermal Expansion

Piping flexibility & Thermal Expansion One major requirement in piping design is to provide adequate flexibility for absorbing the thermal expansion of the pipe. However, due to the lack of a quick method of checking, piping are often laid-out to be either too stiff or too flexible. In either case, valuable time and material are wasted. This article presents some of the quick methods for checking piping flexibility. These methods include visual, hand calculation, and microcomputer approaches. They are all quick and easy for designers to use in planning their layouts. Once the designers have taken care of the flexibility problem, the iterative procedure between the stress engineers and the designers become simpler. The project schedule can also be improved. PIPING FLEXIBILITY As the pipe temperature changes from the installation condition to the operating condition, it expands or contracts. In the general term, both expansion and contraction are called thermal expansion. When a pipe expands it has the potential of generating enormous force and stress in the system. However, if the piping is flexible enough, the expansion can be absorbed without creating undue force or stress. Providing proper flexibility is one of the major tasks in the design of the piping system. Piping is used to convey a certain amount of fluid from one point to another. It is obvious that the shorter the pipe is used the lesser the capital expenditure is required. The long pipe may also generate excessive pressure drop making it unsuitable for the proper operation. However, the direct shortest layout generally is not acceptable for absorbing the thermal expansion. Figure 1 shows what will happen when a straight pipe is directly connected from one point to another. First, consider that only one end is connected and the other end is loose. The loose end will expand an amount equal to  Δ = E L  However, since the other end is not loose, this expansion is to be absorbed by the piping. This is equivalent to squeezing the pipe to move the end back an ~ distance. This amount of squeezing creates a stress of the magnitude  S = E (Δ/L) = E E  The force required to squeeze this amount is  F = A S = A E E Take a 6-inch standard wall carbon steel pipe, for instance, an increase of temperature from 70F ambient to 300F operating creates axial stress of 42300 psi and an axial force of 236000 lbs in the pipe. These are excessive even though the temperature is only 300F. It is clear that the straight-line direct layout is not acceptable to most of the piping, Flexibility has to be provided. EXPANSION LOOP Piping flexibility is provided in many different ways. The turns and offsets needed for running the pipe from one point to another provide some flexibility by themself. This inherent flexibility may or may not be sufficient depending on the individual cases. Additional flexibility can be provided by adding expansion loops or expansion joints. In the straight-line example discussed above, the stress can be reduced by loops installed as shown below. The idea is to provide some pipe perpendicular to the direction of expansion. In this way when the pipe expands it bends the loop leg first before transmitting any load to the anchor. The longer the loop leg the lesser the force will be created. THE CRITICAL PATH In designing a plant, the piping is generally routed or laid-out by the piping designers then checked by the stress engineers. There is a marked difference in the layout done by the experienced and the inexperienced designers. Experienced designers know the importance of flexibility. However, they tend to provide too much flexibility in contrast to the inexperienced ones who tend to provide little flexibility. In either case, the result is an overpriced project. The layout done by an inexperienced designer is normally too stiff because the designer does not know how or too timid to add loops or offsets. If a piping system is too stiff, the stress engineer will almost certain to find it out. The stress engineer will send the design, with recommended loops, back to the designer for revision. At this time, the designer has made some more layouts in the same area making the revision very difficult. On the other hand, a layout was done by an experienced designer often contains the loops which are excessive or not needed. The excessive loops are normally maintained without revision because it is a common practice not to change something which works. The experienced one might have saved the manhour needed for the revision. The cost of the excessive loops can be prohibitive. The cost of the project can be reduced substantially if the right amount of flexibility is built in the piping at the initial layout stage. This requires some quick methods which can be used by the designers to check the piping flexibility. CALCULATING The first step in accommodating thermal movement is to compute the exact change in the linear length of the piping system over the distance of interest, along with a suitable safety factor. Thermal Expansion of Pipe is measuredmm per 100 meters Temp.F/CCarbon SteelCopperStainless Steel -40-24.0-35.1-38.4-28-12.1-17.4-19.0-17000-612.519.719.0019.030.530.8424.937.738.41537.457.157.72648.274.876.83762.794.596.14875.8113.9115.26088.6132.6134.571100.1150.3153.682113.2170.9172.993126.6191.3191.9100134.2202.4203.4104140.1209.7211.3110146.7219.8220.8126168.3……137181.8……148195.9……160211.0……171225.1……176232.6…… An example illustrating the use of the table above follows: Given: 240-foot long carbon steel pipe Maximum operating temperature = 220°F (104°C) Minimum operating temperature = 40°F (4°C) Temperature at time of installation = 80°F (26°C) Calculation: From the table on the right, carbon steel pipe expansion 220°F (104°C) 1.680″ per 100 ft. of carbon steel pipe 40°F (4°C) 0.300″ per 100 ft. of carbon steel pipe Difference: 1.380″ per 100 ft. of carbon steel pipe for temperatures 40°F to 220°F Therefore, 240-feet of pipe = 240/100 (1.380) = 3.312″ This 3.312″ of movement should have a suitable safety factor applied, which varies as determined by the system designer, to account for any errors in predicting operating extremes, etc. These examples were calculated without a safety factor applied. To determine the positioning of the expansion joint at the time of installation: Installation to cold condition (80°F to 40°F) 80°F (26°C) 0.580″ per 100 ft. 40°F (4°C) 0.300″ per 100 ft. Difference: 0.280″ per 100 ft. or 0.672″ per 240 ft. Installation to hot condition (80°F to 220°F) 220°F(104°C) 1.680″ per 100 ft. 80°F(26°C) 0.580″ per 100 ft. Difference: 1.100″ per 100 ft. or 2.640″ per 240 ft. Therefore, the expansion joint is to be set up with at least the capability to allow 0.672″ of pipe contraction and at least 2.640″ of pipe expansion when installed at 80°F (26°C). Spring Support Types & Functions

Spring Support Types & Functions When thermal movements are substantial, the pipe may lift off the support if the thermal movement is upwards or the pipe may be subject to large expansion stresses if the thermal movement is downwards and the support does not allow vertical downward movement of pipe. Flexible or resilient supports allow movement of piping while still providing support to the pipe. Thus flexible supports can be defined as pipe supports that provide supporting force throughout the expansion and contraction cycle of the piping system. Spring supports are examples of flexible or resilient supports. Flexible supports are necessary when the pipe needs to be supported and at the same time permitted to move in the vertical direction. In general, when the permitted vertical movement is low to medium and the variation between hot load and cold load is less than 25%, variable spring supports are recommended to be used. When the permitted vertical movement is large, constant spring supports are recommended to be used. There are other factors which will determine the type of spring supports to be used which are beyond the scope of this article. In a variable spring support, the load imposed by the spring on the pipe varies with the pipe deflection and the magnitude of the load variation depends on the spring rate (or spring constant) of the support. The load variation is the product of spring constant and pipe thermal movement. If a low variation in load is required such as on pump piping supports, it is desirable to choose a spring support with a low spring constant. In a constant type spring support, the load imposed by the spring on the pipe remains constant throughout the range of thermal movement of the pipe. Constant spring supports are used when the pipe deflection is large (above 50-75mm) and may be used near strain sensitive equipments such as pumps and turbines. The choice of using a variable or constant spring support will be based on the results of piping stress analysis. Article source: https://www.piping-world.com/

Pipe Type & Size Comparisons

Understanding the different types of Rigid pipe supports

Understanding the different types of Rigid pipe supports Pipe Shoes Majority of pipe supports in a plant facility will fall under the category of rigid supports. A rigid support is primarily used to support the weight of pipe and its components. Hence its purpose is to prevent the downward movement of pipe. Support intervals or spans are chosen such that the pipe does not sag excessively due its self-weight and the weight of its contents and insulation. A bare pipe may be allowed to rest on a structural member or if the pipe is insulated it may be provided with a shoe. In the later case the bottom of the shoe will rest on the structural member. A shoe support provides a larger contact surface with structural steel member as against bare pipe resting on structural member which results in line contact. Figure below shows examples of shoe support configurations which are most commonly used. The choice of shoe type depends on the size of pipe and the weight of the pipe and its contents. For smaller pipe sizes and lesser loads, a single T-section cut from structural steel section such as IPE or HEA member is welded to the bottom of pipe to form a shoe support. As the pipe size increases and the pipe becomes heavier the shoe support is designed with two vertical members which allows the pipe load to be spread over a larger surface area of the pipe wall resulting in lower local stresses in the pipe wall. The shoe support with saddle uses a reinforcement saddle plate that is welded to the bottom of the pipe. The saddle plate usually subtends an arc of 90° or 120°. The saddle plate can be fabricated from the parent pipe material. However if the parent pipe has high wall thickness, the saddle plate is formed from plate material such as ASTM A36 for carbon steel pipes. A pipe saddle spreads the pipe load over a much larger portion of the pipe surface area and substantially reduces the local pipe wall stresses.  Pipe shoes also serve as convenient means to provide slope on lines routed on pipe racks by using shoes of different heights to achieve the required slope. This allows the pipe rack to be kept at a constant elevation for the other lines which are not required to be sloped. Pipe Trunnion or Dummy Supports Another example of rigid pipe support is a dummy support also called trunnion support.A dummy support consists of a tubular member which is welded to the pipe instead of structural member. A vertical pipe is conveniently supported by using two dummy supports which rest on structural members. Depending on the load and the available structural steel member one dummy support may be used instead of two dummy supports. A base type dummy support is used at control valve stations or pump piping. The base of the dummy support may rest on structural steel member, concrete foundation with base plate or on a spring support depending on the piping configuration and design. A trunnion support may also be welded to a elbow in horizontal direction to support the piping as shown above. The trunnion length should be kept as short as possible to minimize the bending moment and stresses it can cause at the weld joint on the pipe. Trunnion supports may be welded on reinforcing pipe saddles for heavy pipe loads to distribute the pipe load over a larger pipe wall area.  Article source: https://www.piping-world.com/
